This is actually one of my more time consuming pieces. I was inspired by a Time magazine special on gangsters in the 20th century. Building off that idea, I picked four central figures: Al Capone, Pretty Boy Floyd, John Dillinger and Machine Gun Kelly. I then took newspaper clippings pertaining to each individual from the congressional library and inserted them behind their portraits. To emphasize the violence of the times, I scanned photos from the Time magazine archive including actually photos of the Valentine's Day Massacre, Capone's arrest, and John Dillinger's get away car. I also scanned photo in from the graphic novel Road to Perdition.
I created this during my four years living in Bloomington, Indiana. I photographed the same area of Griffy Lake every three months for two years. Then placed each image together combining and interlocking them in several different ways. The end result is a beautiful time-lapse photo of the area.
Additional Commissioned Artwork by Grant Glas:
As an avid Lost (9:00 p.m. ABC) fan I created the artwork above based on the opening sequence of the pilot episode. I took a screen shot of the first and second frame of the sequence and rendered them together. Notice the green iris is actually the second frame of the sequence (0:21). To get a better idea of the piece check out the YOUTUBE video embedded below, which contains the aforementioned opening sequence.
